The Lore

In April 2025, Tether’s CEO posted a cartoon that explained inflation better than most textbooks: monkeys, bananas, and printable leaves. This is that story.

Deep in the jungle, the monkeys had perfect money: bananas. Hard to fake, impossible to over-supply, delicious to hold. Every trade was honest. Every wallet was a stomach. The economy was, in a word, a-peeling.

Then one clever monkey looked up and noticed that leaves grow on trees. Infinite supply. Zero effort. He declared leaves the official currency, appointed himself Chair-monkey of the Leaf Reserve, and got to work. Brrr.

At first it felt like wealth. Everyone had leaves! Then the price of a banana went from one leaf… to a wheelbarrow. Savings composted overnight. The jungle learned the oldest lesson in economics: when money grows on trees, it’s not money anymore.
